(continued) Then promote yourself with all possible means in the places where a potential employer will find you. Modesty is virtuous, but it is also of little help when you need to be noticed. Enhance your visibility. Position yourself as an expert in your field. Writing articles in trade journals of your industry, participating in online forums, posting comments on other experts’ blogs, creating your own blog, twittering and many other new and old methods of self-promotion will help you to be noticed and set you apart from the competition.
Network
You have to understand and embrace constant networking. Not just at the time when you are looking for a new opportunity. The time to network is continually. There is never a time to slight this. Keep in touch with former colleagues and/or peers. Leverage your network.
To access the job you want, make certain that you are on the radar of the right people and that they are aware of what you know and what you can do. If you wish to work for a specific company, it is important to find “connections” with the HR decision makers of this company – directly or through somebody in your network: a former colleague, a recruiter, a well positioned executive in the company of your dreams.
Quid pro Quo
Job hunting and networking are NOT a one-way street. Always offer help to others. This is like paying it forward. Friends, colleagues, and associates feel uncomfortable when they are always being asked to give. Reciprocate in advance! Ask them if they need your help. A very nice gesture is to pass along a note with some relevant information they need, or to introduce them to a member of your network. Only then, you will be able to count on their support when you need their help.
Use technology correctly
Submitting your resume to electronic job boards, résumé “banks”, online search engines has its limitations. In some cases, your best assets are not noticed by the keyword search algorithms, in other cases you are simply victim of companies collecting personal data for other reasons. If you put all of your energy in finding that new job into networking (online through linkedin.com or offline), be sure that someone will finally appreciate your value for a specific position.
